The plans for the new facility include state-of-the-art self storage units for local business and domestic use, as well as high quality office and co-working space.

The Store Room’s new development at Peterborough One Retail Park is due to be completed in 2023, and will not only meet growing demand for self storage, but also offer flexible co-working solutions to support the local business community.

This new facility is part of the wider development at the Peterborough One Retail Park, following the addition of the new Aldi store, which opened in June 2021. The plans for The Store Room’s 80,000 sq ft self storage facility will deliver a secure, sleek, and contemporary building, while focusing on sustainability throughout.

As part of their expansion program, The Store Room has published an environmental policy which sets out targets and initiatives designed to achieve net zero, and these initiatives have been integrated into the design for the new building at Peterborough. These include sustainable construction, solar power capture, proximity-activated LED lighting, creating areas of biodiversity, use of recycled materials, rainwater harvesting, paperless operations, and electric car charging points.

Once completed, the facility will provide secure, bright, and contemporary self storage units ranging from 15 sq ft to 200 sq ft and larger in size. The Store Room will also provide flexible co-working and office space, under their innovative ‘The Office Space’ brand, and through a nationwide collaboration with DHL, The Store Room is also able to provide access to “Pick-up and Drop-off” distribution services for clients and the local community. In combination, these services are designed to support the needs of local start-up businesses and established firms alike, as well as the growing number of workers looking for alternative workspace solutions.

Based on independent research data, it is clear that demand for self storage is growing from both business and domestic users. For commercial customers self storage is particularly attractive as space is rented on a flexible and cost-effective basis with no long-term commitment required. Further support services are also useful to commercial customers, such as parcel receipt and dispatch, and the flexible office and co-working space, which can be used to undertake associated business administration functions. For domestic customers self storage can be an invaluable tool to help navigate important life events, such as moving house, redecorating, decluttering, downsizing, and accommodating a growing family.

The Store Room will directly create three new full-time employment positions. Moreover, through the combination of services including storage and flexible workspace, the facility will indirectly contribute to the local economy by providing specifically tailored services to help local enterprises grow.

The Store Room always aims to be a positive contributor to local communities and do so through active engagement with local charities and organisations, and will continue to do so whilst operating in Peterborough. For example, The Store Room’s facilities in Preston and Leeds support the Cash for Kids charity by donating significant storage space and providing logistical support. In fact, during the annual Cash for Kids Mission Christmas campaign The Store Room’s facilities become ‘Mission HQ’ for the respective appeals.

The Store Room was founded in 2007 and currently operates six self storage facilities located in Leeds, Bradford, Rotherham, Leicester, Salford, and Preston. This new facility in Peterborough is part of a significant nationwide expansion program.

The planning application has now been submitted for the proposal and will be available to view in full on the Council’s website in due course. The architects for the scheme are The Harris Partnership and the planning consultants are Eden Planning.
