Being Sustainable While Decluttering

Although finding the time to declutter can be difficult there’s no doubt that it feels refreshing once it’s done… but what happens to the items you clear out? Instead of just throwing your items away there are smarter, greener methods of parting with your possessions and our Leeds self storage specialists have created a list of tips to ensure that you're sustainable while decluttering – simplifying your life while being kind to the planet.

Step 1: Method to the Madness

While you’re decluttering it can be helpful to create different piles for different uses; keep, donate, recycle or store. This keeps reusable or recyclable items out of the bin, and you can even create sub-categories for example your ‘donate’ pile could be split into donate to schools, donate to charity shop, donate to the hospital etc.

Step 2: Donations! Donations! Donations!

If you have done the previous step this should be an easy task! Local charities, shelters, schools, or other community groups often welcome donated items including furniture, clothing, toys and household goods. Some may even collect from your home, making it easy to pass things on – just make sure to check that your donated items are wanted!

Step 3: Recycle & Upcycle

From electronics to old fabrics, there are specific recycling schemes for almost everything! Alternatively, perhaps you’re feeling creative (or know someone who is), so upcycling can turn tired items into something new.

Step 4: Self Storage to the Rescue

For the items you can’t bear to part with, or personal belongings like camping equipment or your winter wardrobe, self storage can be the perfect solution. It allows you to keep all your belongings without them cluttering up your home.

Step 5: Think Before You Buy

Although it can be difficult, the best way to declutter sustainably is to prevent unnecessary items from entering your home in the first place. Some people use a “Do I really need to buy it” checklist to avoid impulse purchases (example below). If you answer mainly in the first column you would purchase and if you answer mainly in the second column you would not purchase.
