This TV series focuses on the early life of Queen Victoria. Following her ascension to the throne at the tender age of eighteen to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert.

Wentworth House has a feature, and scenes for Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace are actually filmed in Wentworth House.

Interestingly, Wentworth House is the largest private residence in the UK and has the longest country house faced in England at 606 ft long.

Darkest Hour

This film premiered in 2017, and stars Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill and Lily James as Elizabeth Layton (known for her breakthrough title role in Cinderella, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again). The film is set in May 1940, and the fate of WW2 hangs on Winston Churchill who must decide whether to negotiate with Adolf Hitler, or fight knowing that it could mean the end of the British Empire.

Wentworth House in Rotherham was used as a filming location to portray Buckingham Palace. Wentworth House is open to the public, but check the opening times before you go.

Mr. Turner

This 2014 film is an exploration of the last quarter century of the great, if eccentric, British painter J.M.W. Turner’s life. Known in his time as William Turner (23rd April 1775 – 19 December 1851), he was an English romantic painter – some of his famous works are ‘The Fighting Temeraire’, ‘Train, Steam and Speed’, and ‘The Dort’.

In this film, Wentworth House is used as a double for London’s Royal Academy of Arts.

The film continues the story of the Crawley family (TV series available to watch on Netflix), who are wealthy owners of a large estate in the English Countryside, in the early 20th century.

During the film, Lord and Lady Grantham’s neighbours organise a ball for the royal visitors, and this scene takes place in The Marble Saloon at Wentworth House in Rotherham. Wentworth House is obviously a very popular destination for period films due to its amazing architecture.

The Irregulars (2021)

This new TV series is set in Victorian London, and it follows a gang of troubled street teens who are manipulated into solving crimes for the sinister Doctor Watson and is mysterious business partner, the elusive Sherlock Holmes.

Once again, Wentworth House is used for this period TV series, however they used a different part of the house. They used the long-abandoned servants’ quarters (off-limits to the public), and also the old Slaughter House off an area called Back Yard to create the Duck and Quiver Inn – a principal filming location.
