Casanova (2005)

In 2005 a TV mini series was written by Russell T Davis and featured David Tennant (who later went on to play Doctor Who). This mini series covered the life of Casanova and was filmed at several historic locations including Lytham Hall, just half an hour from Preston.

A Monster Calls (2016)

The film staring Liam Neeson and Sigourney Weaver, is about a boy who seeks the help of a tree monster to cope with his single mother’s terminal illness. The Great Times Restaurant on Lancaster road was used as one of the filming locations, but it has now closed.

Peaky Blinders

Hoghton Tower, near Preston, is featured in Peaky Blinders and was used to represent St Hilda’s Orphanage in Birmingham. This programme covers the fictional lives of Tommy Shelby and the Peaky Blinders gang, so called because they would sew razors into their flat caps, operating in Birmingham (in the 1920s).

Fun Fact – Peaky Blinders season 2 is considered the best season (based on ranker.com) – don’t click the link if you want to avoid spoilers!

Life On Mars

Hoghton Tower was also featured in the popular noughties TV drama, Life On Mars. The house and gardens provided the backdrop for the semi science fiction cop drama. The story follows a Greater Manchester police officer, Sam Tyler (played by John Smith), who fell into a coma following a bad traffic accident, and when he regains consciousness, he somehow travelled back in time to 1973.
